Ramadan Dua: Why Allah Says “I Am Near”

Discover why Ramadan dua is placed between fasting verses in 2:186 and how “I am near” is connected to Taqwa.

Ramadan dua holds a special place in the Quran.

In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah speaks about fasting from verse 183 to verse 187. He begins with the obligation of fasting, explains its purpose, and highlights Ramadan as the month of the Quran.

Then suddenly, in the middle of these fasting verses, Allah speaks about dua.

When My servants ask you about Me: I am truly near.I respond to those who call Me. So let them respond (with obedience) to Me and believe in Me, so that they will be guided.

Quran Chapter 2 Verse 186

Why is Ramadan dua placed here? And why does Allah respond directly, “I am near”?

Let’s reflect deeply.

The Powerful Placement of Ramadan Dua

The sequence of verses is remarkable:

  • 2:183 — Fasting prescribed
  • 2:184 — Flexibility and ease
  • 2:185 — Ramadan and the Quran
  • 2:186 — Dua
  • 2:187 — Fasting regulations resume

Dua is placed in between the verses of fasting.

Fasting disciplines the body.
Dua softens the heart.

The goal of fasting is taqwa.
Dua is one of the strongest paths to taqwa.

The Connection Between 2:186 and Taqwa

In 2:186, Allah says “I am near.” Think about it.

Imagine you are about to do something wrong…
And someone whispers, “The boss is right behind the door.”
You immediately stop.

The awareness that ‘your boss is near’ changes your behaviour.

Now imagine living with the awareness that Allah is near:

  • Near when you speak
  • Near when you act
  • Near when you are alone

This awareness is Taqwa and it changes your behaviour. Verse 2:186 creates this awareness in us. See how beautifully this verse relates to fasting! Subhanallah!

A Direct Response: No “Say” (قُل)

In many Quranic passages, when people ask a question, Allah tells the Prophet ﷺ:

قُل” — “Say.”

For example:

They ask you about the new moons. Say: They are measurements of time.

Quran Chapter 2 Verse 189

The pattern where people ask the Prophet ﷺ a question and Allah instructs him to respond with “Qul (قُل)” – “Say” appears repeatedly throughout the Quran. See: 2:215, 2:217, 2:219, 2:220, 2:222, 8:1, 17:85, 18:83, 20:105.

But in 2:186, Allah does not say Qul (قُل)” – “Say”

He answers directly:

“Indeed, I am near.”

This omission highlights closeness. There is no intermediary. There is no barrier between us and Allah.

Ramadan dua is direct.

Allah Promises to Answer

Allah continues:

I respond to those who call Me.

Quran Chapter 2 Verse 186

The Prophet ﷺ said:

There is no Muslim who supplicates… except that Allah gives him one of three: He hastens it, stores it for him in the Hereafter, or averts from him an equivalent evil.

Musnad Ahmad # 11133

Every Ramadan dua is heard.

But there is something important we must understand.

Why Some Duas Are Not Accepted

The Prophet ﷺ mentioned a powerful warning:

A man travels extensively, disheveled and dusty, raising his hands to the sky saying: ‘O Lord, O Lord,’ while his food is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, his clothing is unlawful, and he has been nourished with the unlawful — so how can he be answered?

Sahih Muslim # 1015

This hadith teaches a critical lesson. Dua alone is not enough.

Ramadan dua must be supported by:

  • Halal income
  • Halal consumption
  • Obedience
  • Sincerity

Ramadan Dua is extra powerful

The spiritual climate of Ramadan and the blessings in it elevates Ramadan dua.

Practical Ways to Increase Ramadan Dua

  1. Make dua before iftar.
  2. Make dua in sujood. (Sahih Muslim # 482)
  3. Make dua in the last third of the night. (Bukhari # 1145; Muslim # 758)
  4. Include the Ummah in your supplications. (Sahih Muslim # 2732)
  5. Ensure your earnings and consumption are halal.

2:186 and Call to Obedience

Allah says:

So let them respond (with obedience) to Me and believe in Me, so that they will be guided.

Quran Chapter 2 Verse 186

This Ramadan:

Increase your dua.
Purify your income.
Strengthen your obedience.
Draw closer to Allah, who is already near.

Ramadan dua is not just a request. It is a relationship with Allah.
