Does Islam permit forced conversion?
The answer is: No.
Every now and then, a news story appears accusing some “Muslims” of pressure, manipulation, and forced conversion. Then the discussion and focus quickly changes from the acts of some “Muslims” to the whole Muslim community itself. Soon all Muslims are treated with suspicion.
Islam does not accept faith produced by fear or compulsion. Islam does not allow deceit to bring people into religion.
What the Quran Says About Forced Conversion?
God makes it very clear in the Quran that forced conversion to Islam is forbidden.
There is no compulsion in religion.
Quran Chapter 2 Verse 256
There is no ambiguity. Religion cannot be forced on anyone for any reason.
God also says:
Had your Lord so willed, all (people) on earth would have certainly believed, every single one of them! Would you then force people to become believers?
Quran Chapter 10 Verse 99
And God says:
The truth is from your Lord. So whoever wills, let him believe; and whoever wills, let him disbelieve.
Quran Chapter 18 Verse 29
God says:
So, remind, for your duty is only to remind. You are not (there) to compel them (to believe).
Quran Chapter 88 Verse 22
These verses make it explicitly clear that we cannot force people to believe in Islam.
If any Muslim manipulates, pressures, harasses, deceives or forces someone in the name of religion, that person is violating the teachings of Islam.
Faith Must Enter the Heart
Islam does not treat faith as a label. Islam teaches that faith belongs to the heart.
God says:
The bedouins say, ‘We believe.’ Say: You have not believed; rather say, ‘We have submitted,’ for faith has not yet entered your hearts.
Quran Chapter 49 Verse 14
This verse teaches us that real faith must enter the heart. A person who is compelled or forced will not have true faith that is rooted in the heart.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
Actions are only by intentions.
Bukhari # 1
So, if words come out of fear, distress, or coercion, they cannot become real faith.
Islam Does Not Permit Deception
Some people also claim that Islam allows deceit to gain converts. That is false.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
Whoever deceives us is not one of us. (that is, not a true Muslim.)
Sahih Muslim # 102
Does Islam Teach Muslims to Lie to Non-Muslims? You can read more about this here.
God says:
Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good advice and argue with them in the best manner.
Quran Chapter 16 Verse 125
Islam forbids spreading faith by force, fraud, or deceit. It instructs Muslims to invite people through truth, wisdom, and good character.
False Cases of Forced Conversion
In April 2026, the Allahabad High Court raised concern about a “disturbing trend” of false FIRs under the Uttar Pradesh anti-conversion law. Reports by The Hindu, The Indian Express, and LiveLaw said the court flagged “false, fake, and frivolous” FIRs and pointed to a troubling pattern of misuse.
This shows that accusation does not prove that it is true. A case being filed does not prove guilt. The propaganda machine turns allegations into “facts” and uses them to divide people and create hatred.
Do the Actions of Some Muslims Represent All Muslims?
The entire Hindu community cannot be blamed for attacks on Dalits, Muslims, or Christians. In the same way, the crimes of a few Muslims cannot be blamed on the whole Muslim community.
