How the Quran Explains the Rise and Fall of Oppressors

How the Quran explains the rise and fall of oppressors. Discover why their success is temporary and Allah’s justice never changes.

The Quran explains the rise and fall of oppressors very vividly and it is one of the clearest repeating patterns.

Many ask:

If Allah is Just, why do oppressors seem to win?

Why are good people tested while oppressors prosper?

Allah answers these questions in the Quran directly.  The success of the oppressors is temporary and is part of Allah’s plan.

The Pattern: Rise, Delusion, Sudden Fall

The Quran outlines a sequence for the fall of the oppressors.

  • Rise to power
  • Arrogance and oppression
  • False sense of hope & security
  • Sudden punishment

Let’s understand this in detail.

Rise to power

Allah says:

So, when they forgot that by which they had been reminded, We opened to them the doors of every good thing they desired….

Quran Chapter 6 Verse 44

Allah opens the doors of everything the oppressors desire. They are given wealth. Health. Influence. Security.

Doors keep opening, until they begin to believe no one can stop them.

Arrogance and Oppression

Allah says:

…. then they became proud of what they were given…

Quran Chapter 6 Verse 44

The oppressors become blinded by their success and start to feel proud about their achievements. This pride numbs their morality, and they commit heinous crimes against humanity with impunity.

False sense of hope and security

Allah says:

We will lead them step by step towards punishment, in ways they do not know.

Quran Chapter 7 Verse 182

Allah explains that He leads the oppressors to punishment step by step.

Imagine someone climbing higher and higher, convinced he is succeeding. The higher he climbs, the greater the impact when he falls.

Allah makes the oppressors climb step by step. Each victory strengthens their illusion that they are invincible. The oppressors don’t understand that this is a trap set by Allah. The higher they go, the greater their fall will be. This is called as ‘istidraj’ – gradually luring someone into a trap.

Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) warned:

If you see Allah giving a servant from the worldly life what he loves despite his persistence in sin, then it is surely ‘Istidraj’.

Sahih Jamih # 561

How will the fall of the oppressors happen?

How will they be defeated?

Allah says, “in ways they do not know.”

The oppressors do not know how their fall will come. They do not know from where it will begin.

We too do not know where and how the fall will happen. This reminds us of the limitations of our knowledge.

Sudden Punishment

This is the final stage. This will put an end to the oppressors. Allah says:

…We struck them suddenly.

Quran Chapter 6 Verse 44

From the verse, we understand that the punishment will be sudden and unexpected.

Allah also says:

I will delay their punishment, but My plan is flawless and strong.

Quran Chapter 7 Verse 183

The delay in punishment of the oppressors is part of Allah’s plan. Allah is the best of planners. His plan is flawless. His plan will never go wrong.

Why Does Allah Delay Punishment?

Allah says:

The disbelievers should not think that it is better for them that We give them more time. They are only given more time to increase in sin. They will suffer a humiliating punishment.

Quran Chapter 3 Verse 178

The longer the time the oppressors have, the longer the injustice continues and more severe will be Allah’s punishment.

A Lesson from the Seerah

Khabbab ibn al-Aratt (rad) was tortured severely in Makkah. He complained to the Prophet ﷺ, who advised patience and promised eventual victory. (Bukhari # 6943).

Years later, Khabbab (rad) lived to witness Islam’s success and prosperity. (Bukhari # 1352).

Khabbab (rad) saw the transition from severe oppression to prosperity and dominance of Islam in his own lifetime. This is Allah’s plan.

No Change in Allah’s Way

Allah says:

You will find no change in Allah’s way.

Quran Chapter 33 Verse 62

You will not find any deviation in Allah’s way.

Quran Chapter 35 Verse 43

Pharaoh rose. He fell.
Qarun rose. He fell.
Ad and Thamud rose. They fell.

The names of oppressors change. Allah’s way of dealing with them does not.

Patience During Times of Oppression

The Quran teaches the Muslims how to react to oppression.

Patience with certainty

So be patient. Indeed, the promise of Allah is true.

Quran Chapter 30 Verse 60

Perseverance in hardship

O you who believe, seek help through patience and prayer.

Quran Chapter 2 Verse 153

Do not weaken

Do not lose heart nor grieve, for you will be superior if you are believers.

Quran Chapter 3 Verse 139

Resist injustice without becoming unjust

And let not the hatred of a people prevent you from being just.

Quran Chapter 5 Verse 8

Patience is not weakness. It is conviction in Allah’s plan.

The Warning Applies to You also

Gradual entrapment (Istidraj) does not apply only to rulers. It applies to individuals also.

If someone lives comfortably on haram wealth, the comfort and the wealth they enjoy is a delay from Allah before He punishes them severely. So don’t be deluded by the comfort and wealth you enjoy.

Final Justice Is Certain

Even if the oppressors die ‘peacefully’ without facing punishment in this world, they will surely face Allah’s justice on Judgement Day.

We will set up scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection so that no one can be wronged in the least, and if there should be even the weight of a mustard seed, We shall bring it out. We take excellent account.

Quran Chapter 24 Verse 47

No oppressor will escape Allah’s punishment.

Practical Reflection Checklist

Do I doubt Allah’s justice when I see oppression?

Have trials strengthened my patience or weakened it?

Do I do dua regularly for all my oppressed brothers and sisters?

Do I do whatever I can to create awareness about the oppression?

Conclusion: The Rise is for the Fall

Allah teaches us in the Quran that the rise of the oppressors is for their eventual and humiliating fall. When you see widespread oppression, remember:

  • Their success is temporary.
  • The delay in Allah’s punishment is part of Allah’s plan.
  • Their punishment is unavoidable.

Do not despair. Trust Allah’s wisdom and justice. Do dua and remain patient.
