Introduction
Prophet’s Quran recitation shows how believers can transform their own recitation into a deeply meaningful and spiritual experience.
1) Prolonging and stretching the recitation
Anas (ra) said: The Prophet (peace be on him) used to prolong his voice when reciting the Quran.
Bukhari # 5046
Benefit: Prolonging the recitation creates space for reflection, calmness, and presence of heart, allowing the words of the Qur’an to settle deeply within the soul.
2) Slow and Clear
Umm Salama (rad) described the Prophet’s recitation as “clear and distinct, letter by letter.”
Hidayat ar-Ruwat # 1167
Benefit: Slow and clear recitation improves understanding, strengthens focus, and helps the listener and reciter follow and internalize the message.
3) Pausing at the ends of verses
Umm Salama (rad) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be on him) would separate recitation reciting: ‘Al-Hamdulillahi Rabbil-‘Alamin’ then he would stop. ‘Ar-Rahmanir-Rahim’ then he would stop. And he would recite it: ‘Maliki Yawmid-Din.'”
Tirmidhi # 2927
Benefit: Pausing at each verse allows time for reflection, deepens contemplation, and turns recitation into a mindful engagement rather than a rushed reading.
4) Repeating and Modulating
Abdullah bin Mughaffal (rad) said: I saw the Prophet (peace be on him) reciting Surah Fath in a gentle, soft manner, reciting while repeating and modulating his voice.
Bukhari # 5047
Benefit: Repetition and modulation deepen understanding, stir the heart, and help the meanings of the Quran penetrate beyond the tongue into the soul.
5) Beautifying the recitation
The Prophet (peace be on him) taught us to beautify our recitation.
Make your voices beautiful when you recite Quran.
Nasai # 1015
The Prophet (peace be on him) also warned us about the one who does not recite the Quran in a moving, heartfelt manner.
He is not one of us who does not recite the Qur’an in a moving, melodious manner.
Bukhari # 7527
Conclusion
The Prophet’s recitation was not hurried or mechanical. It was thoughtful, reflective, and full of presence.
It was a recitation that:
- engaged the heart,
- awakened understanding,
- nurtured humility,
- and strengthened one’s relationship with Allah.
When reciting the Quran, follow the beautiful example of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). True recitation of the Quran is not just about completing pages; it is about allowing the Quran to shape the heart, guide actions, and transform life.
