Introduction
There are priceless lessons from the Night Journey (Isra and Miʿraj). The miraculous journey of Miʿraj is a timeless source of guidance for the Muslim Ummah. In this article, we will explore 10 powerful lessons from the night journey.
1 – Being the Servant of Allah is the Greatest Honour
Glory be to the One Who took His servant by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque….
Quran Chapter 17 Verse 1
When Allah speaks about the Mi‘raj journey, He refers to Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) as Abd (servant), not as Nabi or Rasool. Why Abd?
In this world, people chase titles like Doctor, Engineer, Professor, and CEO. But Allah teaches us that the greatest honor a human can ever achieve is to be His servant. Abd is a title of love, closeness, and complete submission to Allah.
Thank Allah for making you, His Abd.
2 – Hardship leads to Divine Honour
The Mi‘raj journey took place soon after the Year of Grief, a time when the Prophet lost his beloved wife Khadijah (raḍ), his uncle Abu Talib, and faced severe rejection and humiliation in Ṭaif.
In the darkest moments, Allah honoured the Prophet by inviting him to a journey to meet Him. The Final Prophet, Muhammad (peace be on him) said:
Whenever a believer suffers any hardship, even a small thorn prick, Allah raises their rank and removes their sins because of it.
Sahih Muslim # 2572
When you go through difficult times, remember that Allah is raising your rank and preparing you for something greater.
3 – Salah – Allah’s gift to us
Ṣalah was the only obligation given directly above the heavens during the Mi’raj journey. This shows the importance of Salah. (Bukhari # 349)
Prayer is not a burden. It is a gift from Allah, an opportunity for you to speak to Him directly and connect with Him.
Do you see Salah as a gift from Allah?
4 – Salah and Allah’s mercy
During the Mi’raj journey, Allah first commanded fifty daily prayers, which were then reduced to five. Out of His boundless mercy and love, Allah promised a reward of fifty prayers for those who perform the five daily prayers. (Bukhari # 349)
When you stand in Salah, bring to your mind Allah’s mercy and love. Pray with your heart, not just your body.
5 – Last verses of Surah Baqarah
The Quran was sent down from the Heavens to the earth, but the last verses of Surah Baqarah were gifted in the Heavens during Prophet’s night journey (Mi’raj). (Sahih Muslim # 173)
The Final Prophet, Muhammad (peace be on him) said:
Whoever recites the last two Verses of Surat Al-Baqarah at night, that will be sufficient for that person (to obtain goodness and protection from evil).
Bukhari # 5009
Recite last two verses of Surah Baqarah every night.
6 – Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) – the Leader of all Prophets
During Mi’raj, Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) led all previous prophets (peace be on them all) in prayer. This shows his unique status as the leader of all the Prophets (peace be on them all) and the final Prophet of Allah. (Sahih Muslim # 172)
What an honour it is to belong to the Ummah of such a Prophet!
Thank Allah for choosing you to be from the ummah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him).
7 – Status of Masjid al- Aqsa
Glory be to the One Who took His servant by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque (Masjid al-Aqsa) whose surroundings We have blessed…
Quran Chapter 17 Verse 1
Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) ascended to the heavens from Al-Masjid al-Aqsa.
Never forget the religious and sacred status of Al-Aqsa. Keep praying to Allah for the liberation of Masjid al-Aqsa.
8 – Heaven and Hell are real
During the Mi‘raj, Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) was shown scenes of Heaven and Hell. (Bukhari # 3207)
This reminds us that our actions carry eternal consequences.
Keep asking Allah for Heaven and seek His protection from Hell.
9 – Sign of Sincere Faith
When the Quraysh mocked the journey of Mi‘raj, only the true believers remained firm. Abu Bakr (raḍ) responded:
If the Prophet (peace be on him) said it, then it is true.
Ibn Hisham
Accepting what comes from Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) with trust and humility is a sign of sincere faith (eemaan).
Do not allow your ego, desires, or selective logic to make you reject the words of Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him).
10 – Allah is above His Creation
The Mi‘raj journey affirms Allah’s absolute transcendence. He is above and beyond all of creation.
Do you feel secure that He, Who is over the heaven (Allah), will not cause the earth to sink with you, and then it should quake?
Quran Chapter 67 Verse 16
Allah is not confined by space or place. He is exalted, supreme, and unlike His creation. Nothing contains Him, nothing limits Him.
Take time to learn and understand the names and attributes of Allah.
Conclusion
The journey of Miʿraj inspires us in countless ways. When understood deeply, it revives our purpose, strengthens our faith, and fills our hearts with greater love for Allah and His Messenger (peace be on him).
