Introduction

India is home to nearly 13.8 crore elderly people. A recent report reveals that millions of elderly Indians are homeless, left without care, comfort, or family support. The Quranic teaching provides a timeless and powerful answer, one that can restore dignity, love, and humanity to how we treat our parents.

Quranic teaching on caring for parents

Old Age Homes – a growing crisis

As individualism grows and traditional family values weaken, we are witnessing an increase in the number of old age homes. Many middle-class children are abandoning their aging parents or placing them in old age homes. Wealthy children buy separate apartments for their parents, leaving them to live alone and emotionally orphaned.

This growing crisis raises a vital question: Where did we lose the compassion and responsibility that once defined us?

Quranic Guidance on Caring for Parents

God has commanded that ‘You shall not worship anyone other than God and to be kind and good to your mother and father. If one or both of your old aged parents stay with you, do not speak to them in an irritating or repulsive manner. Do not drive them away! Speak to them respectfully!’

Quran Chapter 17 Verse 23

Caring for our parents is a divine command directly linked to our worship of God. In the Quran, God places the instruction to honor, love, and care for parents immediately after the command to worship Him alone. This powerful positioning shows that the rights of parents come second only to the rights of God. No other relationship is given such immense importance.

Lower the wings of love and care for them. Pray for them – ‘Show mercy and love to my parents the same way they showed mercy and love to me when I was young.’

Quran Chapter 17 Verse 24

Understanding the Depth of the Quran’s Teaching

The verse 24 from Chapter 17 quoted above, carries a deep and beautiful message that becomes clearer when we understand the imagery behind it.

What does “Lower the Wings” Mean?

To understand this expression, we must observe a mother bird.

Mother Bird Lowering its Wings

When her babies are small, weak and vulnerable, the mother bird lowers her wings over them to protect them, warm them, and shield them from danger. She gives them love, safety, and comfort, without expecting anything in return.

Your Parents Cared for You When You Were Weak

As children, we were weak and vulnerable just like baby birds.

Our parents:

  • fed us,
  • protected us,
  • lost sleep for us,
  • carried our worries as their own.

And our parents surrounded us with love, just like the mother bird covers her young.

God uses this powerful example to make us reflect:

👉 When you were young, your parents protected you the same way.
👉 They lowered their “wings” of love, care, and mercy over you.
👉 Now, when they grow old, they need the same from you.

God reminds us of this emotional truth, so we never forget our responsibility toward our aging parents.

Now It’s Your Turn to Protect Them When They Are Weak

When parents grow old, they become weak and vulnerable. They may need help with:

  • physical support
  • emotional comfort
  • companionship
  • kindness and understanding

God teaches us to respond with humility, compassion, and gentleness.

A Special Prayer God Teaches Us

In the same verse, God instructs every child to make this heartfelt prayer for their parents.

My Lord! Show mercy to my parents the same way they showed mercy to me when I was young.

Quran Chapter 17 Verse 24

This prayer is powerful because:

  • It reminds us of their sacrifices
  • It softens our hearts
  • It strengthens the bond with our parents
  • It earns God’s blessings

A person who recites this prayer regularly will naturally feel compassion and gratitude toward their parents.

How the Quranic Teaching Prevents Elderly Neglect

Think about it:

If someone truly understands this verse…
If someone sincerely makes this prayer regularly…

Would they send their elderly parents to an old-age home?

Would they leave them lonely in apartments like orphans?

The answer is a clear and definite: No!

A heart touched by this divine teaching will never abandon the very people who gave life, love, and protection.

Conclusion

Quran beautifully reminds us that honoring our parents is not just a duty, it is an honor and act of love that reflects our gratitude and faith.

  • Our parents lowered their wings for us.
  • Now we must lower our wings for them.

This is the circle of mercy, God wants us to complete.
