    Civilians cannot be killed in a war Fight in God's cause (only) against those who fight you, but do not cross the limits: God does not like those who cross the limits. In a war, fighting is permissible only against combatants. Civilians cannot be harmed. Quran Chapter 2: Verse 190Who is the most cruel? -"Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) said: ""Without a doubt the most cruel person in the sight of God Almighty, is the one who kills someone who is not engaged in combat."- Musnad Ahmad # 6757No killing of women and children In one of the battles, Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) found a woman killed. Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) forbade the killing of women and children. Bukhari # 3015Ethics of War Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) said: (In the battle) Do not kill children, women, elderly and blind people. Do not uproot a tree, except for a tree that might obstruct you in combat. Do not mutilate dead bodies, do not kill animals, do not act treacherous and do not commit transgressions. Bayhaqi # 9/91Incline towards peace If the enemy is inclined towards peace, you must also incline towards peace and put your trust in God. Surely, God is All-Hearing, All Knowing. Quran Chapter 8: Verse 61No fighting when peace is offered If they (enemies) stay away from (fighting) you and offer you peace, then God has not given you any authority (for fighting) against them. Quran Chapter 4: Verse 90Persecution is worse than killing Persecution (and oppression) is far worse than killing. Quran Chapter 2: Verse 191Monks and Saints cannot be killed Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) said: (In a battle) do not kill those who are people of the places of worship. Musnad Ahmad # 2728Kind treatment of Prisoners of War "Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) said: I command you to treat prisoners of war in a good manner." Majmuz Zawaid # 6/89How did the Prophet treat prisoners of war? "Thumama, a leader from the Banu Hanifa tribe (who were known for torturing prisoners of war) was taken as a prisoner of war. Thumama told the Prophet: O Muhammad! If you should kill me, you would kill a person who has already killed others, and if you should set me free, you would do a favor to one who is grateful. Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) said: ""Release Thumama."" Thumama then said: I swear by God, O Muhammad! There was no face on the surface of the earth most disliked by me than yours, but now your face has become the most beloved face to me. " Bukhari # 4372Release the Prisoners of war Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) said: Give food to the hungry, visit the sick and release (set free) those in captivity. Bukhari # 5373Food and clothes for the Prisoners of War Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) said: It is essential to feed the captives, clothe them (properly) and not burden them with work which is beyond their capacity. Sahih Muslim # 1662Prohibition of Torture Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) said: God would punish those who torture people in this world. Sahih Muslim # 2613Righteous people and Captives (The righteous people) give food, despite their desire for it, to the poor, the orphan, and the captive, (saying): ‘We feed you for the sake of God alone: We seek neither reward nor thanks from you.' Quran Chapter 76: Verses 8 & 9Plunder is not permissible A companion of the Prophet narrated: We came across some of the enemy’s sheep and plundered them, and set up our cooking pots. Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) passed by the pots and ordered that they be overturned. Then the Prophet said: "Surely, plunder is not permissible." Ibn Majah # 3938
